Women's Suffrage

It wasn't until 1920 that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote. Innocent and defenseless women were jailed. They were denied their rights, force fed, and placed in isolation for carrying signs and picketing the White House. History of the Wolfe surname

The Wolfe surname is found in both England and Germany. Our Wolfe ancestors came from Germany. The name started in Germany and was bought to England with the invasion of William the Conqueror in 1066. There was a Hugh Lupus Wolf, Earl of Chester and chief subject of King William the Conqueror.

Our Wolfe ancestor to cross the ocean was George Wolfe (1770, Germany - 1824, Virginia, United States of America). George was Jewish. He converted to Christianity and married a Methodist girl, Elizabeth Catherine Flemming (1794-1850).

In all my genealogical research, our Wolfe line is the only one that came after the American Revolutionary War. Although I haven't been able to trace my Wolfe line back numerous generations, the ones I knew were very dear and loved tremendously!

Circus Roustabout

As a teen, Jim tried his hand as a Circus Roustabout. In a circus, a roustabout helps set up and break down the circus at each venue, handles cleaning, performs maintenance, and assists full-time employees of the circus. They move freight, stock, or other materials to and from storage or production areas, loading docks, delivery vehicles, ships, or containers, by hand or using trucks, tractors, or other equipment. At each train stop, sort cargo before loading and unloading on train. Put tents up and take tents down. Shovel manure. It was hard labor.

Bess' Chocolate Cake

cake ingredients:

2 c sugar

1/2 c shortening

2 eggs

3 c flour

1 c buttermilk

2 t soda

4 heaping T cocoa

1/2 c HOT water

1 t vanilla

icing ingredients:

3 c sugar

1 c milk

3 eggs

4 squares baking chocolate

2 T butter

CAKE: Mix sugar and shortening on low speed until creamy. Add eggs, one at a time, to the mixture & beat with mixer. Alternate adding flour and buttermilk to the mixture. Mix. Add soda and cocoa & mix. Last, add hot water and vanilla & mix. Pour mixture into two 9 inch round cake pans that have been lightly greased and floured. Bake at 350º to 375º until cake tester comes out clean.

ICING: Heat sugar and milk but do not let it come to a boil. Beat eggs and add 2 T of the sugar/milk mixture to the eggs. After the egg mixture has been warmed, add to the sugar and milk mixture. Boil 5 minutes, after mixture starts to boil evenly. Turn off heat and remove from stove. Immediately add baking chocolate and butter. Let stand a few minutes then beat with a wooden spoon by hand until spreading consistency.
